videos by Frits Jetten unless otherwise indicated ……………..….....
Wednesday — Wes Batson flew his large 42 % Extra-260.
He had a couple of nice
flights… Ken Tow showed up with his Hughes MD-500, a scale
helicopter.
It flew well.
Ken also flew his tiny white electric Sukhoi. It flew extremely well
for such a small
plane.
Rober Sanderson had his Mega-SPAD 60 with him, a 12 ft. wingspan
plane that he fabricated out of mostly angle aluminum and the plastic
material with the name Coroplast.
Here is Russell with it. There were wheels on it this time. The takeoff
went just fine. But the flight was short and the landing violent.
Time for another rebuild…
Doug Shorey — an infrequent flier — showed up with his
electric Hobbico Superstar EP trainer and a Hobbico
trainer. He flew both, one seemingly as far as the moon.
You do know that Doug is Mister Tuxedo here in
town?... Robert was ready with his Double Trouble 2, but there
was no flight today.
Saturday— Johnny Turner flew his Raptor 90 heli and Align T-Rex
600 Nitro helicopter…
Flying an Extra-260, Paul Verger flew several flights this
afternoon. He always seems to have a good
time… Paul Kelly brought a small portion of his fleet. His
yellow Four Star 60, a Funtana S 90, the Uproar, and a Cessna.
Did you know Paul is known among his pals as “The
Bugman”? He’s an exterminator, and he’s proud
of it.
Wayne Miller showed up with the “Neville’s Devil”
fun fly plane and a brand-new warbird, a Messerschmitt Me-109.
This was the first
flight. And it went well, until the flip-over landing…
There was another maiden flight. Mike McLaughlin had brought his new
Great Planes Super
Skybolt. The Skybolt’s first flight went very very
well. Looked nice in the sky.
Mike was very pleased.
Russell Ward Piper Cub 40, I was told… Raymond Murtha flew
his Extra…
Justin Peacock flew his latest, a Century Products Predator
90 heli. This one is powered by a nitro engine, an .80, if I recall
correctly… Several pilots discussed the upcoming Rally of Eagles
in Navarre, Florida. Henry Waltman said he was not going…
Sunday — President Enzo and Frits could be seen walking the
runway.
Enzo was compiling a list of items for the upcoming work party. The
runway was once again showing the settling forces that tend to tear
it apart. Enzo plans to seal the holes
and cracks. We wouldn’t want those ever-present crack monsters
to emerge and snatch off landing gear as they have done in the past…
Roger Hagler put his yellow Lazy Bee through its many spins and tumbles.
Oh, he does it intentionally…
Max Needels flew a new plane, a profile Edge-540.
It seemed to fly extremely well… Tony Beckam flew his large
Ultra Stick Lite...
Jon Koppisch had set up part of his 40% Extra-260L.
But the threatening rain caused him to put it back in his trailer…
Tony Farmer‘s new L-4 Cub is taking shape in Wayne Boudreaux’s
workshop.
First flight is a couple of weekends away… Alvin Reed enjoyed
the snacks, food and desert. Not sure what he was eating here…
============= “From the Pits” Field Activities,
Oct. 10 & 11, ‘09 =============

Saturday — This was the weekend of the annual Rally of Eagles
at Holley Field in Navarre, Florida. The event has a few restrictions.
It used to be by invitation only, but that requirement has been relaxed,
according to Rob Baker. He should know as he’s always one of
the invited ones. “No ARFs allowed” gives you an idea
what this event is all about. Everything has to be “strictly
scale” and scratch-built or built from a kit. But I understand
THAT rule is being broken now also. Oh, well…
A few of our club members attended that event. Azalea City Model
Aeronautics members Al Ayler and his wife Cheryl, Rob Baker, Bill
Culberson, and TJ Rohyans went. Rob brought his F-16.
And he flew it in formation with a P-51 Mustang.
At least that is what I was told.
There were some fine sale aircraft there. Like this Douglas A-26
Invader.
And this Fieseler Fi-56 Storch.
And this F-7 Tiger
Cat… Al flew his Bearcat.
And the SPD Dauntless.
He had his own ground
crew… Thanks for the pictures, TJ!
Sunday — Carl Broughton flew his Pitts
Special. The biplane is powered by an O.S. 300 engine.
Most of Carl’s flight was good…
Billy Ray Krebs showed up with his DeHavilland Beaver, one I had not
seen before.
Jon took it off for a flight and it seemed to do really
well… Yes, I know. Today’s pictures all have the wrong
date!…
Sam Guirges flew his Solo Star trainer with Frits on the buddy
box. Sam did great and he should be ready for a solo flight soon…
Johnny Jones showed up with his Trik Stik arrow shaft plane again.
He flew it a couple of times. He wanted to impress Alvin Reed with
the new decals on his truck…
Frank Madison brought his scale F8F Bearcat, the “Rare
Bear”. Jon Koppisch took it up for a spin.
The plane has all the decals on it now, and it looks
great…
Robert Sanderson was getting the Double Trouble 2 twin-engine speed
plane ready while listening to William, our resident close-talker.
Robert asked Frits to test fly the plane. Frits of course complied.
But he shouldn’t have. Things went very wrong from the very
start. The blame is on the plane’s tail-heaviness…
Robert flew his Tiger
2. He used it to pull some more whistling Nerf
bombs.
Russ Green flew his Ugly Stick 40. It looked as if he was going to
handlaunch I, but he didn’t.
He does handlaunch his Phence Post and Battle Axe combat planes, however…
Mike Callen and Gary Johnson were involved with some sort of airplane
exchange. I
found out later that those wings are parts to a plane that will look
like this Aeronca
LC…
Dean Ritola got a close-up of Tal Fowler and his ultralight aircraft
as it went by overhead toward nearby Roy
E. Ray Airport… Justin Peacock flew a couple more test flights
on his Raptor 90 heli. One ended up in Foster’s
Fish Pond…
Ken Tow showed up with a small, electric Lancair. Ken says it’s
a great flier.
Ken also flew his Hughes MD-500 heli again.
Great looking scale
heli. Billy Frost no longer has that Russian URAL motorbike with
sidecar. He is now the proud owner of a Suzuki
V-Strom. Looks nice!
Henry Waltman flew his 2-seater Spacewalker.
He also let Tony and TJ handle the controls.
Surprisingly, Henry was still in a good mood after Tony and TJ flew
that thing…
Al Ayler showed up with his yellow Bearcat, the “Beetle Bomb”.
He and Jon flew it. The flight went fine. The landing was nice and
smooth. The rollout — well — not
so much. It’s those wheels
again! But there was no real damage.
Three 3D planes flew today. Sam Chest flew his giant scale Dietrich
Extra-260, Jon Koppisch 40% Yak-54
and Jonathan Festa his 40% Edge-540.
They mostly hung together.
Nice flying!
Check out that Festa
Stance… Jeff was making fun of Alvin eating so much. Notice
Alvin’s two
plates. That’s like the pot calling the kettle black, isn’t
it?
Our Azalea City Model Aeronautics Annual Fall Scale Fly-in is scheduled
for Saturday Oct. 24 & Sunday 25. Blow the dust off of your scale
planes, helicopters and jets, charge your batteries and plan to be
there!
That’s all for now. I’ll see you at the field. Be safe!
