================== ACMA Irvington Field Activities, Dec. 19
& 20, ‘09 =================

Saturday, Dec. 19 — Let’s go ahead and start with an
update of Andy Anderson’s banged up finger. As you may recall
from last week’s report, he got it in a prop while checking
its rpm. It still looks pretty bad, doesn’t
it? According to Andy it feels about as bad as it looks…
Katarina “Katt” Connors had her giant scale Aeroworks
Edge-540 out.
She flew it after tending to some problems with the engine.
After some minor repairs the bright yellow Edge with the two black
cats on it flew just
fine… Marvin Helton and Dean Ritola were there, and Russell,
of course.
And that was about it…
Sunday, Dec. 20 — I got an e-mail from Al Ayler. He wanted
me to pass on to his buddies that he would not be able to be at the
field because of religious reasons. He had to go to church and he
sent me proof. Taken with his new iMac’s built-in camera, I’m
sure…
TJ Rohyans showed up with his newest gadget, the Hawkeye.
It’s an electrically powered camera carrying motorized
kite. It carries a Canon digital camera, which can be programmed
to snap a picture on command by a switch on the transmitter.
It can also be set to take a series of pictures automatically.
It was a bit tricky to take off, as there’s no
steering.
The angle of the camera can be switched to one of two positions in
flight. The first couple of flights were to get the CG
right. Then the camera was put to work.
And it took some great pictures of the field.
After TJ got it trimmed out it flew and landed
well. And it works great!
Here is the intersection nearby.
And here is our flying
field.
Very nice!
Jimmy Kennamer brought his Escapade.
He showed off a bandaged hand, which got cut when one of his planes
attacked him.
A large electric twin-engine Deuces Wild that jumped to life before
it was supposed to. In his living room, no less. The cuts were not
severe, but that goes to show
you… Jimmy’s son-in-law Ramsay Clevenger flew his
electric ParkZone Typhoon 2 delta wing plane, I believe…
Kenny Morris (on right) ran into William
Moore. It didn’t take long and the close-talking monologue
was on…
Kenny has rejoined the club. Here he is with Marvin Helton who is
new and has just
joined the club. Marvin had recently picked up a used Extra-300…
Henry Waltman and companion Julia showed up with Henry’s Cub.
Here’s Robert Sanderson with Julia (middle) and Linda
Koppisch. Robert snuck in there while Henry wasn’t looking…
Joe Krebs had also brought a Cub, his smaller
one. He and Henry flew formation, sort
of… Joe’s brother Billy Ray flew his EZ Sport…
There was food and Frits could be seen sampling some of Leigh Koppisch’s
delicious baked
turkey. Alvin made sure Frits took a picture of him eating a healthy
salad. What
you don’t see are the two full plates of real food that he put
away after that…
Elton Sullivan sent me a picture of his new Sky Raider Mach 2 pylon
racer. He and Johnny Jones will be racing under the team name
“EltonJohnny”. The plane will be shared by both pilots
due to work scheduling. Racing in this class should start around March…
Ken Tow brought his foam Star Destroyer space craft, an Ugly Stick,
a Mini Ultra Stick and the Banchee.
Ken is an all-electric
guy. Here is a video of the Star
Destroyer. Another flight didn’t fare so
well. But damage was very minor.
Russ Green flew a couple of his combat planes, and the good ol’
Kaos. It’s
obvious that building material for the type of combat plane that Russell
flies can be acquired very
cheap. Russ was quick to point out that he got the plane from
son-in-law Mike McLaughlin… Paul Kelly showed off the SIG Kadet
Senior that Gary Johnson renovated for
him.
Like Russ, Johnny Turner was ready to do combat.
However, they were the only two combat pilots ready, and under the
newest combat rule, if there are fewer than four contestants, combat
would be skipped. So Johnny flew his big Raptor helicopter instead.
At one point he found himself sharing airspace with two very different
aircraft.
ACMA club President Enzo Finizola, his dad and brother-in-law came
to visit. Here they are discussing TJ’s eye
in the sky… Roger Hagler flew his Hyperion .46, a really
nice and agile little
plane. Roger really likes that plane. And apparently he also likes
the pepper sauce that Robert makes. Robert left several bottles of
the hot stuff as Christmas
gifts.
After I left the field, Jon and Robert took off the new Double Trouble,
a foam aircraft powered by two Webra
.50s. Here’s the takeoff.
And after the crash.
Not too much damage.
These three videos were taken by Paul and Robert… Jon also flew
his U-Can-Do 3D
airplane.
Sometime during the week, Russell — or was it Jon? —
found a small lake developing in the parking
lot. It was caused by a leak right outside the sink in the pavilion.
After calling Frits to find out where the shutoff valve was, they
shut the water off and started digging.
And wouldn’t you know. At about that time club member David
Etheredge showed up. Not to fly, just to hang out because he happened
to be in the neighborhood. Well, David is in the plumbing business,
so it was perfect timing! He jumped right in there and fixed the pipe
that had broken due to the soil sinking
in that area. Nice job, David.
And thanks!
Here are a couple of pictures from the Netherlands, sent to me by
Jan Leeuwestein, who’s club members apparently fly year ‘round,
just like us.
Club members don’t stop flying just because of a little snow.
This is their flying
field. That brings back some memories for me. I lived there from
age 7 until 17, before coming here.
Notice — Feb. 6, Annual Swap Meet, Pensacola Civic Center Gym.
Northwest Florida Modelers, Inc., Pensacola, FL.
That’s all for now. I’ll see you at the field. Fly safe!
