================ ACMA Irvington Field Pits Report, August 15, 2010 =================

I was out of town most of this past weekend, having a good time with some friends on Dauphin Island. Unfortunately water was a bit too rough to go out on my friend’s boat

I got back Sunday around noon. It was combat day, but I didn’t have my combat plane ready. When I got to the field, I found out that I wasn’t the only one. Russ Green, Robert Sanderson, Andrew Smith and Johnny Jones were present, but I saw only one plane ready for action. So combat was cancelled.

Roger Hagler was flying his new T-34 Mentor… Billy Ray Krebs got a couple of flights in with his EZ Sport… And Roger Geil flew his highly maneuverable ModelTech Formula 3 for some wild stunt action

Mike Callen was working on his newly acquired G-Shark. There is a steadfast rule at the North End that a minimum of six people must surround any plane needing repair or even just minor attention… Mike, who buys and trades more planes than anyone I know, showed off his new goodies

I saw a couple of sailplanes. TJ Rohyans had brought his electric ParkZone Radian. He had some long flights... David Doss also showed up with a Radian. But at the end of one flight the powered glider came in hard and suffered some damage.

Jonathan Festa was back with his colorful giant scale Edge-540. He also showed off his latest toy, an electric F-35 Lightning II. It is a ducted fan, thrust-vectoring jet. The jet nozzle gimbals 360° for some wild aerobatic flying! The first flight was brief. One wing was knocked loose. The F-35 was grounded…

Wes and Marie Batson showed up. I think that only Wes flew. Both fly identical 42% Extra-260s… Sam Chest, also a 3D pilot, was at the field, but I’m not sure if he flew… Jon Koppisch flew his electric Habu jet. It’s pretty fast and can do some nice maneuvers, which Jon showed off by doing some crisp four-point rolls…

Carl Broughton brought his Pitts Special biplane, the one that broke its engine off some time ago. Carl was just testing the engine today, an OS 300, I believe… Mike Beauchamp was in deep discussion with William Moore, safely keeping the table between him and William

There was some cooking going on, and Rhonda Johnson had brought a huge bowl of banana pudding. Thanks, Rhonda! That pudding didn’t last long… Here are Jimmy Kennamer, Ramsay Clevenger, Ben McGee and Frits Jetten, taking it easy

Our field kitchen experienced its own oil spill that day. Russell found out that you don’t pour cooking oil that is hotter than the melting point of plastic into a jug. He learned a valuable lesson

Oh, that plane I had trouble identifying last weekend is Jimmy’s TT-62 Alekto. This is a scale copy of a fairly recent plane by German manufacturer High Performance Aircraft (HPA)... Found out that Jimmy’s son-in-law Dane Kinman is completing a P-40 Warhawk… And TJ is still working on his Olympic II sailplane. It’s coming along.

Some of you may recognize this guy. That’s Mike Lee. He hasn’t come around for about five years abut he’s now thinking of getting back into the RC hobby. With him is his father-in-law, Wallace Merrymen… Gary and Rhonda brought a Cessna Skylane. Frits flew it. It was the plane’s second flight.

Elton Sullivan has been working on his new hobby room. Russell Ward and Johnny Jones have been helping him with several of the chores. Rumor is that Russell has pretty much claimed one corner of that man cave, and is planning to sneak his leather chair in there soon… Elton is back on the river again, pushing barges.

And then the rains came. Did they ever! Everyone took refuge in the pavilion. And it was quite a group. Among them were Henry Waltman and Julia White, Linda and Leigh Koppisch, and Joe and Betty Jo Krebs. Lightning was popping all around. And the parking lot and kitchen shed partially flooded

In the middle of the deluge Mike Callen passed a Cub on to Robert. Mike and Ed, the elder Callen, removed the engine and electronics. You can almost see Robert visualizing that Cub outfitted with his wild modifications… Not sure who traded what, but Robert now has a .91 Rossi engine.
